A Glimpse into History

Grass Valley's history is deeply intertwined with the Gold Rush of the mid-19th century, which transformed the region into a thriving mining hub. Established in 1850, the town quickly became a bustling center for gold mining and a key player in California's rich history.

Three mines dominate Grass Valley’s mining history – the Empire Mine, the North Star Mine and the Idaho-Maryland mine. The Empire and North Star mines were the richest in California at their peak from 1900 to 1925. You can visit much of this mining history today.

The Empire Mine State Historic Park and North Star Mining Museum
